So I saw these prints from S-W over at manystuff. I know i said I’d try and tone down some on the picture stuff but for some reason I couldn’t help myself with these. They feel like stills from a film…either that or something from The Ring. Not conviced? I’m not sure that I am either.
A bit of self promotion. Why not!? :P
While i’m at it here’s some pictures of my work featured at the Central St Martins Graphic design degree show 09. The Bargehouse at the OXO tower is a great venue and thankfully I managed to get my work up as I hoped and imagined it would look.

This week i will be mostly…
SO still on my to do list is the exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, Walking in my mind. The exhibition says it aims to explore ‘the artist’s imagination through immersive, large-scale installation art.’
Oh phew nothing too complicated then?
I’m preparing for a colourful labyrinthe of dark secrets and even darker desires as they attempt to answer those notorious biggies such as “who am i? and “does who i am bear any relevance on what i do?” [Or is that the other way around?]
While just around the corner from me Roger Hoirns has decorated an abandoned flat in blue copper sulphate crystals! Hell why not??!! Actually, this happened last year but due to popular demand has re-opened, to be honest i can see why. ‘Every day hundreds of people made their way across the capital to this anonymous council flat near the Elephant & Castle.’ Of course it was abandoned, no one would choose to live in Elephant and Castle?! :S Maybe I should offer my flat up next…
Also out is Coco before Chanel. Hopefully this biopic lives up to legend of the designer. Although a doe eyed Tautou should perform typically well.
I’ll let you guys know what I thought and if I reccomend any of the above.
Later.

We’re back in black [and pink] !!

Well to say we’ve been away is a bit of an understatement.
But we’re back…and much has happened since we’ve been gone. So we’ll try and catch up seeing has we have a bit more time on our hands.
So whats the plan??
Well i’m hoping to feature some of my fellow graduates and get some news from their side. Have they got work? Is it all recession doom and gloom? What do they hope to achieve now that they are on the other side?
I also want to spark up a bit of debate…lets not make this another picture “oooh thats NICE” graphic design blog. Lets try to talk about other topics relevant to us all.
How does that sound?
Hasta pronto.

Business Cards
The pressure is definately on now mind. This morning I have been thinking business cards seeing as we are going to need something to stand out at the degree show…
Clever idea from Jamie Wieck over at Airside of encouraging a prospective client to keep you business card on the table, quite literally. Hmm does anyone else think growing stuff is in Vogue?

The ol’ rubber stamp stuff never gets old unless done badly. Here’s a nice version by Chris O’Neil designer over at Sassen.

Playful design who doesn’t like tearing things…they’ve linked it to their website too.

Is this funny or in bad taste???

Blah blah I hog the blog and something about the Marshmallow test

Photo credit Vicki Couchman, Daily Mail Online
For my unit 14 project I’ve been looking at the education sysytem and how learning is structured. As research I watched the Horizon episode with David Baddiel called “Who do you want your child to be” (sounds like a show filled with pushy parents and child prodigies but thats only a fraction of the episode
). I don’t know if any of you managed to catch it, it aired the 17th of March but was also availiable through BBC iplayer.
In it I was also introduced to the Marshmallow test. Originally performed by Walter Mischel a psychology professor at Columbia university in the 1960′s. The experiments claimed to identify a link between the ability of a 4-year-old to resist a marshmallow and their academic success as young adults.
Hundreds of 4-year-olds were tested, placed in a room one by one with a solitary marshmallow on a plate in front of them. The four year old was then told by the adult supervising them that they were free to eat said marshmellow, unless that is, they could manage to wait 20 mins until they returned and would be rewarded with an extra marshmallow (remember these are primary school children). Needless to say some children wasted no time in sinking their teeth in, others tried in desperation to control their urge but were seduced, but perhaps more suprisingly some children managed to stay the course and were rewarded with their second marshmallow.
When Walter Mischel interviewed the participating toddlers as grown 18 year olds. Shockingly those that had been able to delay their gratification were found to be more academically successful, self-confident and socially competent. While those that didn’t, suffered from mood swings and envy.
Ok ok so perhaps it’s not a 100% fool proof test…but delayed gratification does seem to be a sound conclusion to the test. Although perhaps the biggest question is would you have eaten the marshmellow?
Here’s an intersting version of the test although I very much doubt the original included chocolate sauce (try not to be put off by the gentleman in the suit or the laughter track)

A small minute for you a giant leap for my project or something like that

I am now working on my final major project (in graphic design). The subject chosen is ‘marriage’.
I am looking into the relevance and role of marriage today’s society. Values, divorce rates and the effect it may have on the marriage as a dying institution.
And I would like your opinion on the subject….yes you!
- What is your view on marriage? Is marriage still relevant today?
- Are you single / in relationship / living together with partner-cohabiting / married / divorced?
- Are your parents (still) married?
- What is your age and nationality / cultural background?
Please post a reply here or on my facebook group
Thank you!
